HURRICANE SEASON IS HERE, SO BE PREPARED WITH 2-1-1 ASSISTANCE… When hurricanes are on the way, don’t stay. This is the message of the Governor’s Division of Emergency Management who wants everyone that needs transportation out of a hurricane zone to know that options are available when it comes to evacuating. Individuals who need a ride may call 2-1-1 to register for evacuation transportation. Trained specialists will take personal contact information and ask additional questions about any special medical needs that may affect the type of transportation a person needs. The Special Transportation Registry is open year-round for registration, although it is heavily advertised during hurricane season from June 1 – November 30. 2-1-1 Texas/United Way Helpline is available 24 hours/day 7 days/week and individuals who need assistance may discuss available options with a specialist and learn about services in their local area. During disaster events, 2-1-1 is activated by local and state emergency management officials to disseminate official information about shelter availability, evacuation routes, road closures, and other important information about the situation. Specialists have access to language interpreters in more than 150 languages. For the Transportation Assistance Registry, dial 2-1-1 to register. Measles in Houston Recently, there has been an increase is diagnosed measles in the Houston area. Because of these cases, all healthcare providers in Texas are asked to consider measles in the differential diagnosis of febrile rash illness.Measles is a highly contagious febrile rash illness caused by a virus transmitted via the respiratory route. The incubation period averages 10-12 days without seeing any signs or symptoms. After about 14 days from exposure, you see a rash with fever that generally lasts 2-4 days and is characterized by fever, increasing and often peaking at 103°-105°F. Fever is followed by the onset of cough and/or conjunctivitis. Koplik spots are considered to be true sign for measles and appear blue-white spots on the bright red background of the inner cheek of the mouth. These spots can occur 1-2 days before rash to 1-2 days afterwards. The measles rash begins at the hairline and gradually proceeds to face and upper neck and from there downward and outward. Complications can include middle ear infections, pneumonia, swelling of the brain and seizures. A case of measles must be reported immediately to the state or local health department. If you suspect a patient has the measles, the following steps should be taken:1. Isolate the patient. 2. All visitors and staff working with the patient should use airborne precautions (masks).3. See a doctor and get tested4. Report the patient to the health department- Fort Bend County Health & Human Services-281-342-6414 For more details on immunizations and vaccination schedules per the CDC, visit their website.
